Accommodation

'Lwenge' takes its name from the ancient local word for this stretch of the Kafue River; it’s tranquil, unhurried waters the perfect backdrop to your safari. Here elephants cross on an almost daily basis, zigzagging from bank to bank, whilst leopard and lion seek shade in the lush riverine vegetation. And for those in the know skimmer island is a mere stone throw away.

Although new, Lwenge River House is part of Classic Zambia’s legacy in the Kafue - many of our repeat guests will remember ‘Old’ Musekese where we started out all those years ago, and we recently decided to go back. With just 8 beds the River House is dedicated to private bookings, be it families, friend and photographic groups or couples that want that extra bit of space and privacy. A spectacular star-bed sits on the eastern end of the camp and a purpose-built guide’s room is included on the property.

Wildlife

The wildlife viewing in and around Lwenge is exceptional - this is the Musekese area of the Kafue. Game numbers and the quality of sightings have improved year upon year thanks to increased protection and concerted habituation by Phil, Tyrone and the team. All the major predators are present, with leopard particularly well represented. Elephant herds are always visible in the dry season months and the plains game is as numerous as it is varied from sable and hartebeest to zebra and puku (puku in their thousands!). Birding is top-class, with hundreds of species recorded in and around the area.

Experiences

We appreciate that our guests come with a great variety of interests and we have taken care to ensure that the well-maintained equipment we use reflects that. From the flat-bottomed hulls of our sturdy river boats, to the option of game drive vehicles with or without the roof. For the keen photographers we have specially adapted camera mounts to ensure complete stability for your shots.
